Summary:

In June 2023 a change in legislation in Australia means extra steps need to be taken to ensure your SMS messages are successfully delivered to Australia.

Details:

Regulations governing text messaging and the use of alphanumeric Senders IDs announced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in June 2023 means extra steps need to be taken to ensure you can successfully send SMS message to Australia.

A Sender ID identifies who, or what organisation has sent a message - and your customers see it when they receive an SMS from you. The ACMA regulations now require you to register your Sender ID for approval, prior to sending messages to Australia.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

If you want to ensure there is no disruption in sending SMS messages to Australia you need to register the Sender ID(s) you wish to use in Australia. Please check with the guidelines below to determine if your Sender ID is compliant before registering. If you current Sender ID is non-compliant then you will need to choose an alternative Sender ID before registering. To ensure we can approve your updated Sender ID in the shortest time possible, please confirm what you would like it to be by Submitting a ticket. Once received, we will confirm by return within 96 hours, if your proposed sender ID(s) meet the standards required.

Guidelines for Sender ID for use in Australia:

  • An alpha-numeric Sender ID must be between 4 and 11 characters, including spaces
  • It must NOT contain only numbers (unless a valid long virtual number)
  • It must NOT contain a generic name (e.g. INFO or ALERT)
  • It must uniquely identify the sender - i.e. your brand name/company

What is needed to register:

  • List of preferred Sender IDs (compliant with the guidelines)
  • Written statement from the requisite authority within your company, confirming that you have a valid use case
  • you will also need to provide one of the following

    • Company Number certificate
    • Business utility bill

Please note SMS Messages to other countries is not affected. This does not impact Email sends.
