BIMI stands for Brand Indicators for Message Identification.  It aims to help improve visibility in the inbox by enabling the use of brand-controlled logos within supporting email clients.

For the brand’s logo to be displayed, the email must pass DMARC authentication checks, ensuring that the organisation’s domain has not been impersonated.

This is how BIMI would look in the inbox:

There is one main prerequisite that must be in place before you can start using BIMI:

DMARC policy must be at enforcement:

Reject on the organizational domain and subdomain policy (i.e. p=reject; sp=reject) or Quarantine at 100 percent (i.e. p=quarantine; pct=100).

Note: “None” policies or ‘pct’ less than 100 percent are not accepted.

How to implement BIMI

1) Ensure that you have SPF, DKIM and DMARC records set up for your domain, and that all have the correct policy in place.

2) Produce an SVG Tiny PS version of your official logo.  Note - it must be your official logo and not another image that may represent your brand.

3) Acquire a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) for your logo (this is optional but will need to be purchased if you want BIMI to display in Gmail).

4) Publish a BIMI record for your domain in your DNS provider.
